ある日アルニ・クリスチャンソンは思い出した。子どものころ、友達の誕生日プレゼントに迷ったときには、自分が描いた絵を贈っていたことを。その絵はいつも、みんなが大好きなキャラクター、バート・シンプソンが描かれていた。

それから数週間後にアルニは、レイキャビクにあるリサイクルショップでアイスランドの風景画が売られているのを見つける。そのときに彼の頭の中で、目の前の風景画と、かつて自分が友人たちにプレゼントしていたバート・シンプソンの絵がリンクしたのだった。もし、バートがそこにいたら？彼はそこで何をしていて、どんな人なのか。想像が駆け巡る。彼は本当はその風景の中にいたはずなのに、アーティストが描くのを忘れていたんじゃないのか？

「Bardt S.」(“バート・エス”) では、アイスランドの名もないアーティストの絵の上に、バート・シンプソンのキャラクターを描いた作品を展示。かつての持ち主に捨てられ、リサイクルショップで売られていた数々の風景画を、バートの悪ふざけの背景として生まれ変わらせた。

「Bardt S.」は、アルニにとって、画家としては始めての個展となった。過去に写真家として開催されたフィルム写真展（東京、レイキャビク）を含め、今回5度目となる個展の開催となる。

About the exhibition:

Confronted with a need for a birthday present for a friend, Arni Kristjansson thought why not make them a drawing like he used to give as presents as a child. Bart Simpson was an obvious choice, their mutual favorite cartoon character. Several weeks later, Arni stumbled upon a landscape painting by an unknown artist in a thrift shop in Reykjavik. Somehow the painting and his drawing of Bart linked and his mind went racing. What if Bart lived there? What would he be doing? Who was he? Was he there all along but the artist forgot to paint him in?

The “Bardt S.” exhibition is compiled of various paintings of Icelandic scenery by unknown Icelandic artists that Arni paints the character of “Bardt S” on top. The artworks that Arni uses as background for Bardt's shenanigans are found at recycling shops and thrift shops, many of them thrown away by their previous owners.

This is Arni’s first exhibition of paintings. Previously he has exhibited film photography in Tokyo and Reykjavik. Arni is an artist, DJ, writer and previously a cultural studies scholar based in Reykjavik, Iceland.
